30 oz or 40 oz Stanley Quencher: which size to engrave

Same cup, two heights. The 30 oz and the 40 oz Stanley Quencher are built from the same parts list: 90% recycled 18/8 stainless steel, BPA-free, double-wall vacuum insulation, a screw-on 3-position lid, a reusable straw and a comfort-grip handle. What changes between them is ten ounces of capacity, three tenths of a pound empty, and an inch and a half of height. That last number is the one that matters most when the cup is getting engraved.

What the extra ten ounces gets you

Two more hours hot. Two more hours cold. Ice that holds for two days instead of 40 hours. If the cup gets filled once in the morning and has to still be cold at the end of a long shift, the 40 oz has more margin. If it gets refilled at a sink a few times a day anyway, that margin is not doing much for you.

The weight difference is real but small

Empty, the 40 oz is 0.3 lbs heavier. You will not notice that on a desk. You will notice it when the cup is full and traveling with you, because the ten extra ounces of liquid ride on top of that. Both sizes have the same comfort-grip handle, so it is a question of what you are carrying it to, not whether you can hold it.

Both fit a car cup holder

Base diameter is 3.1 inches on both sizes, so neither one is a problem in a console. The difference is above the holder: the 40 oz stands 12.3 inches tall against 10.8 for the 30 oz, so it reaches an inch and a half higher. If you have a low dash shelf, a lid on your console or a cabinet you slide the cup under, measure that gap before you decide.

Engraving room is the tiebreaker

This is where the two cups actually differ for a personalized order. Placement options are back vertical, back horizontal, front vertical and front horizontal, and back vertical is the default. A vertical layout runs down the height of the cup, and the 40 oz has an inch and a half more of it. A horizontal layout runs across the body, and the 40 oz body is wider too, 3.86 inches across against 3.46. The 5.4 and 5.82 inch figures include the handle.

So the size question is about your text, not your thirst. A first name, initials, a monogram — either size carries it comfortably. A long full name, a first and last name stacked, a name plus a date, or a list of several kids' names has more room to breathe on the 40 oz. The same goes for a logo with fine detail. Text is engraved exactly as typed, capitals and all, so type it the way you want it to read.

The engraving itself is identical on both

The mark is laser-cut into the cup. It is not vinyl and not a sticker, so it will not peel or fade. The laser removes the powder coat and exposes the metal underneath, which means the engraving comes out in the color of the lid — silver on most cups. It is not a color you pick.

Picking one

• Go 30 oz if the cup travels with you, if the text is short, or if height clearance is tight.
• Go 40 oz if it mostly sits on a desk or in a car, if you want the longer cold hold, or if the design is long, vertical or detailed.
